The win also extended Spain's record to six consecutive World Cup clean sheets, which is absolutely ridiculous. They have not conceded a single goal in this entire tournament. It is like they are playing with an invisible force field around their net.
This was also, of course, the final World Cup appearance for Cristiano Ronaldo. The man who scored at six different World Cups, who netted 11 goals across 27 matches, who set records that might stand forever—he walked off the biggest stage for the last time. Rodri earned Player of the Match honors, but the real story was Merino, the super-sub from Pamplona who once again proved that timing is everything.
